Reflections
1-3
When beginning the book, I was caught off guard by the dialect that the book is written in. Although it gives me a better sense of who Huckleberry is, it is sometimes hard to follow. I have gotten more used to it though, and now I find that the hardest part of the book to read (so far) is when Jim is speaking because Jim’s grammar is very bad.
I was alarmed to find that the boys in the gang were looking forward to killing and robbing people. I think that maybe pretending is fine, but the boys were disappointed when they found out that it was all pretend. They also discussed killing peoples' families as if it was a very normal thing to do. They also signed the oath of the gang in blood which was gross to me.
The simplicity that Huckleberry thinks is amusing just because he thinks over the things that Miss. Watson tells him very carefully. He draws conclusions by justifying whether or not it seems worth it to him.
So far, I like the book and am curious to know if Huckleberry will have his adventures with Tom because Huckleberry seems to want to go wherever Tom goes.

The description of Pap was disgusting, and the way he treats Huckleberry even after they are away from civilization is very abusive. Huckleberry seems to stand it well which I suppose isn't surprising because he probably grew up with Pap like this. I didn't like how Pap locked Huckleberry inside the cabin. Even Huckleberry worried that his Pap might not return.
Before Chapter six, Pap repented and promised the new Judge that he would start his life over and be a good person. While I read this, I was convinced (like the judge was) that maybe Pap really did have a change of heart. But he quickly went back to drinking which disappointed me a lot. I think that it would take a lot of good counseling over a long period of time to get Pap to stop drinking and become a hard-working, honest man.
In the same way, Huckleberry's appearance and attitude change as two months go by because his clothes turn to rags and he starts cursing again like he used to. He likes this.
I'll admit that Pap scared me when he woke up and was screaming about snakes. It was disturbing that he really felt like there were snakes on him that were biting him all over. When he turned on Huckleberry with the knife it was even more intense. I hope that Huckleberry soon leaves.

I was surprised that Huckleberry was smart and clever enough to think of staging his own death the way he did. I probably would have just run away as soon as I saw that Pap was gone and not think to make extra diversions so that no one would follow me.
I liked how Huckleberry came across Jim because I think that both of them will benefit form each others company.
When Jim said that he had run away I was surprised because it seemed like he was one of the head slaves. But after hearing his story I sympathized with him.

9-11
Jim is very superstitious and it makes me wonder if I am. I don’t think that I am but I think that from day to day there are things that we do that are somewhat superstitious. For example, we knock on wood and wear good luck charms or lucky socks to an audition.
It would do Huck some good to tell the truth. I was surprised at how easily he could lie,. I don’t think that this is an admirable trait but it seems very useful for him.

12-14
It is funny how Huck justifies stealing. I think it is an exaggerated display of what some people do to justify doing wrong. There always seems to be a “but” when it comes to doing something band nowadays.
It was very scary when they discovered the murderers. It made me sad though when the ship sank because that meant that they all died. I don’t like the thought of people dying.
I had a laugh when Huck was trying to explain to Jim that Frenchmen don’t talk like we do. It was funny that Jim couldn’t understand the concept of different languages

15-16
I thought that it was very mean of Huck to pull that prank on Jim even after Jim had admitted how scared he was to lose Huck. It was a little heart-breaking when Jim got up and went into the wigwam. I was happy when Huck made up with him though. In chapter16, Huck doesn’t turn Jim in and I am very relieved. I think that he learned a good lesson about friendship.
17-18
The family feud is absolutely ridiculous!! No one even remembers when it started or what it is about! It makes me think that maybe we do hold grudges and we don’t know why or maybe even realize that they are there. This grudge led to the deaths of many people on both sides. It reminds me of Romeo and Juliet.
19-20
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the careers of the duke and king turnout. Already they have made a lot of money. I don’t think that the next time I need a little money I am not going got cheat people out of it though even if it seems to work right now for them.
21-24
The Hamlet’s soliloquy was funny to read. I noticed a line from Macbeth too! The first line was the funniest: “To be or not to be: that is the bare bodkin.”
The Scene when Bogs dies was very violent. I wasn’t expecting that kind of thing in this book. Also, the circus parallels the duke and kings performances.

25-28
wonder if the duke and king are going to take advantage of the $200 on Jim’s head even though they have recently made him a sick Arab.
I hope that they don’t get away with tricking a dead man out of his money that is in his will. I am very glad that Huck told Mary Jane the truth. It always feels good to tell the truth even when it is hard to . I am excited to see if Huck’s plan works.

29-31
I guess I will never know if they were the real Wilks because Huck ran away before Peter Wilks’ chest could be examined. I am so upset that Jim was turned in/ sold by the duke and the king.
If I was in Huck’s place tight now, I would help Jim but I think that I would know better than to think that I would go to hell for helping so someone.

32-34
It is so great that Huck is supposed to be Tom who he knows so well. If I had to pretend to be someone, I think I could only impersonate one of my sisters. I don’t know the lives of my friends well enough to impersonate them. It would be fun though!
35-38
It is frustrating that Tom can’t do anything the easy way. I’m sure that they will succeed in rescuing Jim because the book I almost over. I guess it will be fun to see what Tom thinks of next. I would never let Tom put snakes, rats, or spiders in my cabin if I was Jim. I feel bad that Jim is going to have to put up with those! I know that I could never….
39-40
Tom is making this a lot more troublesome than it needs to be.
How can Tom possibly say that he is the gladdest when he has a bullet in his leg?! He must have a very high tolerance for pain. I think that a doctor is bound to discover Jim and that would mean that it would all be for nothing!

41-43
I can breathe a sigh of relief now that I know for sure that Jim is free. That adventure was still worth it even though Jim was free almost the entire time. I wonder if Tom would have helped Huck rescue Jim if Jim hadn’t been freed by Miss. Watson in her will?
At the beginning, I thought that it was going to be hard to read this book because of the dialect. I thought that is would be boring too. I was very wrong in both ways!!
